He confronts the rigid examination system and the competitive, career-focused mindset of his students, contrasting it with his own anarchist values and experiences on Anarres. Despite the material comforts and intellectual freedom offered, Shevek struggles with a sense of disconnection and alienation from the capitalist society around him, exemplified by his bewildering experience of consumerism and the superficiality of wealth and possessions.
