Lilith is guided by the ooloi Kahguyaht to visit Sharad, who is suspended in a genetically altered carnivorous plant that sustains him in a state of suspended animation. She learns about the Oankali's biological technologies and their complex relationship with humans, including their manipulation of life forms for survival and care. Lilith is then entrusted to Nikanj, an ooloi child, who begins to learn human language and culture from her, highlighting the ongoing cultural and biological exchange between species.
