Chapter 1 ENTER THREE HUSSARS

The chapter introduces Greta Forzane, an Entertainer who nurses time-traveling Soldiers wounded in the Change War, a secret conflict fought across time to influence a distant future. The narrative focuses on the Place, a recuperation station outside normal space and time, where three newly arrived Soldiers—dressed as hussars and including Greta's commandant Erich—arrive amid tension and conflict, culminating in a violent confrontation that tests the fragile order of the Place. The chapter sets up the complex temporal warfare, the psychological toll on participants, and the interpersonal dynamics among the Entertainers and Soldiers.

Chapter 2 A RIGHT-HAND GLOVE

In this chapter, the characters discuss the complex and morally ambiguous nature of the Change War, a conflict involving time travel and competing factions called the Spiders and the Snakes. Bruce Marchant, a new Soldier and poet, expresses frustration with the inefficiencies and ethical compromises of their missions, particularly the manipulation of history by the Spiders. The dialogue reveals the psychological toll on participants and the paradoxical resilience of cultures despite repeated historical alterations.

Chapter 6 CRETE CIRCA 1300 B.C.

In this chapter set on Crete circa 1300 B.C., Kaby reports a devastating ambush by the Serpents disguised as Cretans, resulting in the destruction of Crete's ships and a dangerous breach of their safe zones by the enemy. She reveals the death of a comrade and the critical mission entrusted to Sid involving a tactical atomic bomb and an operation in northern Egypt to strike back at the Serpents. The chapter explores the tension and fear among the Spiders as they face a new form of attack that threatens their existence beyond the normal bounds of the cosmos.

Chapter 7 TIME TO THINK

In this chapter, the characters confront the imminent threat of a powerful atomic bomb trapped within a bronze chest, causing widespread panic and debate over how to handle it. Despite their advanced abilities and knowledge of time and space, they are paralyzed by fear and uncertainty, highlighting their vulnerability. Bruce steps forward to calm the group and initiate a serious discussion about the war's psychological and existential toll on them.

Chapter 16 THE POSSIBILITY-BINDERS

In this chapter, the narrator reflects on the aftermath of recent conflicts and interpersonal tensions among a group trapped in the Change World, revealing complex relationships and mistrust. Illy, an alien octopoid, communicates telepathically to explain a profound evolutionary concept: the existence of four orders of life culminating in 'possibility-binders' or Demons, who transcend time and space by binding all possibilities, framing the ongoing Change War as an evolutionary dialectic rather than mere conflict.
