In this chapter set during the London Blitz on 25 October 1940, Polly reunites with Michael Davies, a retrieval team member, amidst the chaos of an impending air raid. They search frantically for Merope, a missing colleague believed to be working in the department store Padgett's, which is about to be bombed. After finding Merope, the trio attempts to escape via the elevator, but it becomes stuck between floors, trapping them as bombs fall around them.
