In this chapter, Akin, a young construct child who is part Human and part Oankali, experiences and communicates through an Akjai ooloi to the Oankali and construct populations about the possibility and necessity of Akjai Humans. Despite initial shock and resistance from the community, Akin advocates for the survival and independence of Humans as a separate species, challenging prevailing opinions and seeking allies among Human-born constructs. The chapter explores the emotional and political complexities of identity, survival, and interspecies coexistence.

In this chapter, Akin, newly transformed with Oankali traits, remains vulnerable and immobilized while dealing with the aftermath of Rudra's brutal death at the hands of raiders. Tensions arise among the human survivors regarding trust and fear of Akin's altered nature, while Tate expresses her conflicted loyalty between humans and Oankali. The chapter explores themes of survival, identity, and the difficult choices faced by those caught between two species, culminating in a tentative plan to help the Mars colony succeed through genetic healing and cooperation.
