The Ringworld Engineers (1980)Larry Niven

Chapter 7

In this chapter, the characters Louis Wu, Chmeee, and the Hindmost explore the Ringworld's swampy regions and investigate the remnants of its engineering, including a damaged recycling system and the inactive Repair Center. They discuss the mysterious origins of the Ringworld's creators, hypothesizing a connection to the Pak species, whose complex life stages and history are introduced through the story of the Pak protector Phssthpok. The chapter blends exploration, technological mystery, and deep speculative xenobiology.

Chapter 8

In this chapter, Louis Wu finds himself aboard the Hindmost's spacecraft with two Ringworld natives, Harkabeeparolyn and Kawaresksenjajok, who are confused but eager to help save their world. Louis and the Hindmost work to repair a reading machine to decode tapes about physics and the Ringworld's design, while monitoring Chmeee's reconnaissance mission, which ends with him being attacked and injured at a medieval-style castle. The chapter highlights the urgency of understanding the Ringworld's electromagnetic properties to determine if it can be moved back into position or if escape and mutiny are necessary.
