In this chapter, Ravna prepares for a rescue mission to extract Jefri Olsndot and his ship, the Out of Band II, from a dangerous region near the Slow Zone. Despite the ongoing threat of the Straumli Perversion (the Blight), the expansion of the Blight has slowed, allowing some hope for the mission. Ravna negotiates with her superiors to join the mission, coordinates the ship's refitting and communication systems, and builds rapport with Jefri through messages, while the Skroderiders and other allies ready themselves for the journey.

Pham Nuwen awakens from a medical surgeon tank with injuries sustained in a recent firefight and quickly assesses the precarious situation aboard the ship, including the compromised loyalties of the Skroderiders Greenstalk and Blueshell. He deduces that the Skroderiders have been subverted by a malevolent force known as the Straumli Perversion, which manipulates both Riders and their mechanical skrodes, revealing a deep and ancient conspiracy that threatens their survival. The chapter explores the complexity of trust, the nature of the enemy, and the ancient origins and stability of the Skroderiders' design.
