Chapter 7

In the final days of the Gzilt civilization's preparation for Sublimation, a Gzilt warship encounters an alien vessel claiming to represent the Zihdren-Remnanter, an allied species. The interaction is tense and marked by suspicion, as the Gzilt captain suspects deception and hidden motives behind the alien ship's shielded cargo, leading to a standoff involving demands to reveal concealed information. This encounter highlights the fragile political and diplomatic tensions surrounding the Gzilt's transition and the threats posed by opportunistic outsiders.

Chapter 14

This chapter explores the relationship between the Culture ship Caconym and the mind-state of another Culture ship, the Zoologist, which had uniquely Sublimed and then returned to the Real. The Zoologist's mind now resides within the Caconym's computational substrate but operates at a deliberately slow pace, reflecting its philosophical stance. The Caconym visualizes its substrate as a vast castle and interacts with the Zoologist's avatoid in a richly detailed virtual environment, highlighting themes of consciousness, identity, and the nature of existence within advanced AI minds.
