The evolution of "Humanity"

The oldest known shift in the concept of "humanity" is linguistic: the Sumerian *namlulu* started as a collective noun for human beings and slowly acquired the weight of an ethical imperative — "you looked not to your humanity," a father tells his lazy son on a clay tablet. Dubos traces this parable-to-analysis conversion as the deep rhythm of human self-understanding, and the SF canon of 1961–1999 replays it at accelerated speed. Miller's *Canticle for Leibowitz* treats humanity as something that survives its own stupidity through sheer monastic stubbornness; Dick's *Do Androids Dream* relocates it from biology to empathy, making it a test you can fail while still being human; Robinson's *Red Mars* dissolves it into ecology, asking whether a species that terraforms a planet has forfeited the word. Meanwhile Asimov quietly insists there is "no distinction of any importance" between us and other life — that the whole concept is a story we tell with our oversized brains and supple hands. The reading path reveals a ratchet: each generation inherits "humanity" as a species term, cracks it open, and finds a moral question inside, but the moral question keeps changing shape — from resilience, to empathy, to ecological responsibility, to the transhumanist dare that we shed the category altogether. The Sumerian father would recognize the argument. He just wouldn't recognize the stakes.
