Echoes of "Foresight" across the library

Brand's 10,000-Year Library sends messages to governments that no longer exist about hazards they've forgotten. Asimov's Galactic Library on Trantor survives the fall of Empire because no one bothers to modernize it — Pelorat prays the dusty librarians have changed nothing. Vinge's UCSD library gets shredded and rebuilt as hallucination, its books turned into groaning phantoms in an augmented-reality dungeon, and the one person who can see the bare concrete has to close his eyes to navigate. Three different centuries of speculation, and each arrives at the same uncomfortable finding: foresight is not prediction. It is the decision to keep the unfiltered record intact so that futures you cannot imagine have something to work with. The urgent displaces the important, Brand writes. Asimov's Foundation has its eyes fixed firmly on the future and is irritated by those who peer into the past. Vinge's students chant "Down with the Librareome" while robots simulate the texture of books that have already been destroyed. Every version of the library that tries to be *useful to the present* eats itself. The ones that survive are the ones no one found worth updating.
