Preamble

The chapter 'Preamble' introduces an advanced alien spacecraft called the Searcher, designed to locate and exploit planetary resources through automated factories and self-replicating robots. After successfully establishing a manufacturing complex on a lifeless planet, the Searcher encounters a supernova that disrupts its systems and erases critical data, causing a cascade of failures in its robotic replication process on a subsequent icy world. This sets the stage for the challenges faced by the automated systems as they attempt to continue their mission with incomplete information and damaged programming.
