This chapter introduces the Fravashi, an alien species whose perception is deliberately distorted by an implanted organ called the glaver to prevent them from seeing reality as it truly is. The protagonist, Danlo, arrives in the city of Neverness and is taken in by Old Father and his students in the Fravashi District, where he begins to recover physically and mentally while grappling with the strangeness of his new environment and the alien culture of the Fravashi. The chapter explores themes of perception, alienness, cultural encounter, and the challenges of learning and adaptation.
