In this chapter, Shadow wakes up in his new apartment in Lakeside and attempts to walk into town despite the extreme cold, suffering from the harsh winter conditions. He is rescued by Chad Mulligan, the local police chief, who offers him assistance and introduces him to the town's social environment, including a local café and its proprietor, Mabel.
