Shadow returns to the town of Lakeside in early spring and ventures onto a dangerously thawing frozen lake where he discovers a car abandoned on the ice. Inside the trunk of the car, he finds the preserved corpse of Alison McGovern, a girl who had been missing, revealing a dark secret about the town. As the ice breaks beneath him, Shadow falls into the freezing water, struggling for survival and confronting the haunting presence of the dead beneath the lake.
