Chapter 7

The chapter introduces a society of gentleman-magicians in York who study the history of English magic but do not practice it, highlighting their inability and reluctance to perform real magic. John Segundus joins the society and questions why magic is no longer practiced, sparking debate and division among the members. Encouraged by Mr Honeyfoot, Segundus plans a visit to a reclusive magician living at Hurtfew Abbey, hoping to find answers to the decline of magic in England.
